Emblem

Description: Glass, bronze, sand; 12 units; dimensions variable; Arnold Bloch Leibler, Collins Street, Melbourne Concept Statement: 'Emblem' investigates the use of multiples in the public domain by establishing tension between the natural world and the artificial. Totemic and isolated, these 10 units emulate a series of native Wollemi Pine cuttings disconnected from their original environment and immortilized in bronze. 'Emblem' makes reference to the duality of the species being both, a protected living fossil and a propagated, commercialized domestic product. The work creates a narrative where the complexities of globalization, consumption, mass production, cloning, manipulation and preservation co-exist. 2008
